How The U impacts several sociological subtopics
Race: The African American members of the team often faced heightened scrutiny from society.
Some black teammates would get pulled over by the police constantly because Coral Gables was a predominantly white area. Also, the team as a whole was perceived to be a group of thugs, mainly due to the predominant African American influence. Social Deviance: The Miami football team exhibited deviance several times in order to show that they would resist cultural norms. Fatigues: The wearing of fatigues prior to the National Championship game is deviant because it shows a lack of respect for the opponent, and is generally not considered appropriate attire when not at war. Celebrations: College football players weren't typically ones to celebrate after a play. However, the Miami players would celebrate with boastful dances, salutes, etc. Social Class: Prior to the 1980s, Coral Gables was regarded as a location for wealthy white Americans to relax in the sun. But with the limelight put on the outlandish football team, the reputation of Coral Gables degraded. Also, the African Americans on the team were mostly from the inner cities of Miami, and the fact that they were from the lower class gave them a negative connotation to higher class individuals. |
